When I was newly married my Mother gave me a starter that was given to her by a neighbor. That neighbor claims to be able to trace the origins of this particular starter to the Oregon Trail. I don't know about all that, but it does make some nice bread and pancakes. Good luck with yours and don't forget to save some.
