The pouch sling

The sling is done! I finished it late last night, we all look very tired for sure... I was planning on timing myself so as to report how long this project really takes, but I had neglected to account for the ill-will of infant Finn and his voracious intentions! I am estimating that you would need two hours of calm to make the sling with the finishing touches used (more on that later). The pattern is a mix of this one and this one. The fabric is Amy Butler Nigella. Total cost: $20, that's pricey fabric that is ;)

What I changed:
I double-topstiched (not a word surely) the hemmed edges, it looks very finished. I also used a flat-fell for the round seam, then triple-topstiched that. It's very strong this way...one hopes.

I am planning on making a little tutorial this week-(end) on how -to make nice narrow edges as well as a rounded flat-fell which I discovered are not really strait forward.

How to get the baby to happily lay in there:

Ah! good question... I decided to nurse him in there twice (remember that he's a hungry baby). After some initial screaming, he realized the clear benefits of being quiet. I still need to try it today and see if he is still imprinted.
My greatest problem I suspect was that his bottom was too high. You really want it down there in the rounded pouch.

For more eye-candy ( very expensive/ gorgeous slings) check those out.

i REALLY need one of these!! the Baby Bjorn is great for going on walks, but it's impossible to nurse with it. you did a great job! and still look gorgeous even without any sleep

you are so fast! bam! bam! done! it looks great, and you and finn look SOOOO cute!

You star a tutorial would be great! I love it & need one!

Nice job on the sling. Sadly, I'm nearing the end of my sling time, but if I were still in the thick of it I'd add a feature that I saw on a "Peanut Shell"( http://www.goo-ga.com/productinfo/sling )sling that I saw in a baby shop yesterday.

It has some little rounds of padding on the inner edge. These work as padding under the baby's knees for when he is sitting in an upright position in the sling.

I dealt with this problem by putting a piece of rib in the bottom area for a little stretch around the legs.

I also just put bias binding on the edges (except for the rib bit) of my sling instead of hemming it for a nice contrast.

I'm pretty sure none of this makes sense without seeing it!

Thanks so much for those links! I have been pondering making one for a while for our little one in waiting. The sling looks great! Best wishes.

Oh, that fabric is absolutely gorgeous. I hope he takes to it.

Good job mama! I do CS for Stacey at Karma Baby so I'm going to sender this link!

well done, it looks great!(and all with a baby!!)

The fabric is beautiful!

That is so nice! You two are totally cute!

Oh you are sooo good. It looks great in that fabric. It may have been a bit expensive, but still cheaper than the original one in the magazine. Way to create Ms. Juju!

It looks great! I love the fabric! I have a pattern waiting for me downstairs to try (mom test drove it, worked great) but i'm just a little intimidated at this point. Maybe i'll wait for your tutorial. I have a Peanut Shell waiting for me for the time being. :)

the sling turned out GREAT! finn looks so cozy in there.

The sling looks great! I love the fabric. I think you and Finn will both come to love the sling. I highly recommend using one, it was the best thing ever for my fussy baby!
